Benchmark

The passive alternative a strategy must beat to justify its existence — usually buy-and-hold of the same asset or a broad index. A strategy that returns 8% while its asset returned 12% unmanaged destroyed value despite being profitable. Every honest backtest report shows the benchmark on the same window.
